Thyme has been used since ancient times and has long been an emblem of courage and bravery. Egyptians used thyme for embalming. Greeks used it as incense and in their baths.

Thyme is known for being a very good antiseptic and is still used in Listerine mouthwash.Thyme is also used for coughs and was known as a cure for whooping cough.

In the kitchen thyme has many uses. It is good in soups and stews. It tastes wonderful with fish, lamb and other meats.My favorite use is in herb butters and salad dressing.

Thyme is a hardy perennial that loves to grow near lavender. It is a beautiful addition to any herb garden.

The tepee sits on a hill on a perfect spring evening. This small painting, an acrylic landscape study depicts the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and a traditional Native American tepee. The art is painted in a loose impressionistic style in soft yellow, pale green and sky blue with just a touch of purple in a dark cloud. Could it be another spring shower moving through?

This is the quick sketch I did sitting out beside the tepee on a beautiful evening between the almost constant spring showers we have been getting. Putting Up the Tepee part 2

The decision had been made and the wind had started picking up. We had the tepee down in minutes. After more careful measurements for the tripod and where to place the ties the tripod goes back up. With all the men folk that had wandered in all the poles were in place very quickly. It was already looking better.

The riser pole goes back up. We untie it and stretch it around the poles. After lacing it up it looks amazing! I am so thankful to my friends and family for all their help.



And here it is up on the hill.
All in all it took me more time to figure out how to put that "Buy Now" button on my blog than to raise the tepee. So y'all use and stay tuned for more of the saga and photos of the interior.

Painting My Tepee

I have spent the last week painting my tepee. It has been a huge undertaking. I had no idea it would take so much time and paint. It was tricky finding a dry enough time and a poop-free zone to spread it out. Gosh it looks huge. See the tiny little horses. I used a tent stake, string and a charcoal pencil to draw the circular bands on the tipi. I had to work quickly before the chickens came to help with the decoration.

Back in the studio I had more helpers. I spread a section on my table and painted it using watered down Golden Liquid Acrylics. When I painted the liner I could use painters tape on the straight edges, but this was all at so much of a curve I free handed it. The top section is a gold ochre followed by suns which are traditional for Kiowa tepee's. I used a stamp for this I bought on clearance. The next small band is metallic copper.

Then there are the hummingbirds, lots and lots of them. My Indian name is Little Hummingbird.

The blue row is phases of the moon. The bottom row is wolf tracks. In between will go the horses which will be 3'x4'. I will do them after the tepee is up.

The poles are 24' long and there are 17 of them. I am still working on sanding and sealing them in between spring rains.

The plan is to have it up by mid April. I am so excited!

Tonka Wins Reward

I named my pup Tanka, Souix for great and today he was. I was washing out the stock trailer on this fine spring day. Dad was out enjoying the sun in his electric wheelchair. I went to turn the water off and noticed something in Tanka's mouth. The last time this happened I ended up prying a dead bird out off his piranha teeth. But this time it was money!

Dad had dropped his money clip out of his pocket and Tanka had found it. It would have been better if he had brought it to me. We'll have to work on that.

New Rule: From now on any money I pry out of my critter's mouths is mine.

Dinner and a Show

I was sitting last night having dinner minding my own business. My step brother came in and said there is a problem with one of the bulls. Then he said, "You know the green plastic chair we had down at the pond.

Nuff said.

I leave my half eaten dinner and head for the pasture.

I bust out laughing when I saw T-bone. Here is a pretty good size bull calf with his head sticking through the arm rest of this molded plastic lawn chair, his nose pressed against the seat.

I go get a bucket of feed ( my answer to everything) and pour it in the trough.

T-bone wasn't able to eat for the chair being in his way, but I was able to grab ahold of the chair legs. My plan was to gently push it up and try to slide it over his horns. His plan was to throw his head up and spin around. I didn't see any point in hanging on too long. We repeated this one time and decided not to play like this anymore.

The calf been fed only an hour before and it was almost completely dark so I left him and hoped it was off by morning. It was. Happily we had no rodeo today. Sadly it was too dark to take pictures and my dinner got cold.

I know your asking right about now what the horses are doing during all this.

All five were lined up quietly at the fence watching. Well not entirely quietly. I heard some whispers, shh... let's listen.

What is the servant doing?

Stop laughing.

Is that some sort of cow saddle?

I hope she doesn't think she is going to do that to me.

I think they call that reining.

But where is she trying to sit?

That's not reining.

T-bone is the calf in the Mad Cow painting. I did this mixed media art with apparently some sort of premonition. I found him the next morning bawling his head off, trapped between the round pen, a fence and a shed. He was mad then, but not as mad as he was this time.

Waiting For My New Toys and Paintings on Canvas Paper

I ordered a massive amount of art supplies from dickblick.com and turned around and busted the handle off my canvas pliers the very next day. I had to place another order with more shipping charges.

The canvas pliers were at least 25 years old. I was beginning to think they would last forever,but I guess not.

I am waiting for all my new toys to arrive and not all that patiently. I should be working on my website but painting is so much more fun.

I have pulled out some canvas paper I bought at Hobby Lobby on clearance. The first few paintings I did on this went straight into the wood stove . It is not like painting on canvas or paper. It seemed to suck the moisture out of the paint. Wetting the surface didn't work either. I started adding some slow dry medium to the paint and things started going much better.

Blue Rider is a study for the Spirit Horse series. I really like the feel of this 9x12 study. I hope it will translate into a bigger painting. I'll have this one posted for sale soon, but y'all get to see it here first.

Beach Bliss is from the same sketch as a painting I did called Jubilee. When I took Jubilee to a gallery, the owner just hated it. He took it anyway and sold it that week. I started trying to choose work for his gallery that I thought he would not like. The paintings he likes he NEVER sells. This new strategy worked very well and I increased my sales dramatically. Go figure.

Mountain Pass

Spring is in the air in the Ozarks although it is still Febuary. I have been putting eggs in the incubator, readying the garden and hey, starting a blog. We'll see which comes first the chickens or me mastering this blog stuff.

I am ready to start getting more time in on the horses and trails. But for now it is more studio time and more art.

I have just finished a new acrylic diptych called Mountain Pass. It is absolutly alive with color and texture. The red, gold and sienna pop against the blues and black. I just love this painting.

Mountain Pass is 20"x 32". Each gallery wrap canvas is 16"x 20". The original is for sale for $245 plus shipping on etsy, zibbet and artfire. My shop name is lancasterart.
